About Ellina Abovian
Ellina is a proud L.A. native, deeply grateful to be back home telling stories that touch the heart and make a difference in the very community where she grew up.
Born in Yerevan, Armenia, she came to the United States as a baby, carried on the hopes and dreams of her parents—both Russian and Armenian—who gave up everything so that Ellina and her brother could have a better future. Growing up in Glendale in a close-knit immigrant family, the evening news was more than just background chatter—it was a daily ritual that sparked her lifelong passion for storytelling.
That passion first bloomed at just nine years old when she created the Windsor Chronicle, a hand-crafted newspaper covering the daily life of her apartment building. It only lasted four issues before being set aside for a Super Nintendo, but it planted the seed for a career dedicated to giving others a voice.
Ellina went on to earn her degree in broadcast journalism from California State University, Los Angeles. Her professional journey began with CBS Television and LA2DAY.com, working across production, marketing, and online publishing. She later took her talents to San Luis Obispo as a “one-woman band” journalist—shooting, writing, editing, and reporting her own stories. From there, she moved to Fresno, covering the California drought, destructive wildfires, and high-profile animal cruelty cases.
Most recently, Ellina brought her skills and heart to KTLA’s sister station, KSWB Fox 5 News in San Diego.
Fluent in Armenian, Russian, French, and English, Ellina loves connecting with people from all walks of life. Her adventurous spirit has taken her around the globe, and at home she finds joy in cooking, exploring new restaurants, hiking, enjoying art and films, and cherishing time with loved ones.
